Acyclovir is a synthetic purine nucleoside analog with inhibitory activity against herpes simplex virus types 1 (HSV-1), 2 (HSV-2), and varicella-zoster virus (VZV).

Bioavailability of topical use is minimal.
Renal excretion of topical cream is 0.04% of daily-applied dose.

Contact dermatitis

Apply topically every 3 hours (6 times per day) for 7 days in sufficient quantities to adequately cover lesion
