Pyridoxine is converted in erythrocytes to pyridoxal phosphate and to a lesser extent pyridoxamine phosphate, which act as coenzymes for various metabolic functions affecting protein, carbohydrate, and lipid utilization.

Infant risk is minimal.

Paresthesia, somnolence and low serum folic acid level.

Deficiency: 5-25 mg/day PO for 3 weeks, followed by 1.5-2.5 mg/day in a multivitamin preparation QD. Drug-induced vitamin B6 Deficiency: 100 mg/day for 3 weeks, followed by 30 mg/day for maintenance.
