Antibiotic, Cephalosporin (3rd): Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).

Absorption: 40% to 50%.
Protein binding: 65%.
Half-life elimination:
Normal renal function: 3 to 4 hours.
Moderate impairment (CrCl 20 to 40 mL/minute): 6.4 hours.
Renal failure: Up to 11.5 hours.
Time to peak, serum: 3 to 8 hours.
Excretion: Urine (50%), feces (10%).

Hypersensitivity to cefixime, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.

>10%: Diarrhea (16%).
2% to 10%: Abdominal pain, nausea, dyspepsia, flatulence, loose stools.

Gonococcal infection: 800 mg as a single dose.
Rhinosinusitis, acute bacterial: 400 mg once daily (+/- clindamycin) for 5 to 7 days.
Streptococcal pharyngitis: 400 mg once daily for 10 days.
Typhoid fever: 100 to 200 mg twice daily for 7 to 14 days.
Urinary tract infection:
400 mg once daily for 7 days (Cystitis, acute uncomplicated or acute simple cystitis);
400 mg once daily for 10 to 14 days (Urinary tract infection, complicated).

susceptible infection (mild to moderate): 8 mg/kg/day once daily or in divided doses every 12 hours; maximum daily dose: 400 mg/day.

Altered kidney function:
CrCl≥60 mL/minute: No dosage adjustment necessary.
CrCl >20 to <60 mL/minute: 300 mg once daily.
CrCl ≤20 mL/minute: 200 mg once daily.
Hemodialysis, intermittent: 300 mg once daily.
Peritoneal dialysis: 200 mg once daily.
