Cortisone is used for replacement therapy in chronic adrenocortical insufficiency, salt-losing forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia syndromes, and as an anti-inflammatory agent.

Cortisone is rapidly converted in the liver to hydrocortisone (cortisol) with a biological half-life of approximately 30 minutes.

Hypersensitivity to cortisone or any component of the product; systemic fungal infections

D No evidence of congenital malformation was associated with the use of cortisone, but the neonatal adrenal hyperplasia or insufficiency should be concerned.

Infant risk can not be ruled out.

Sodium and fluid retention, loss of potassium, muscle weakness, steroid myopathy, osteoporosis, peptic ulcer, pancreatitis, impaired wound healing.

20-300mg/day QD or BID.
1. The maximum activity of the adrenal cortex is between 2:00 am and 8:00 am, and it is minimal between 4:00 pm and midnight. Exogenous corticosteroids suppress adrenocortical activity the least when given at the time of maximal activity (am). In order to minimize adrenocortical suppression, administer glucocorticoid before 9:00 am.
2. When large doses are given, some authorities advise that antacids be administered between meals to help prevent peptic ulcers.
