Inhibits RNA-dependent protein synthesis at the chain elongation step; binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit resulting in blockage of transpeptidation.

It is not known if erythromycin is excreted into breast milk following ophthalmic application. The manufacturer recommends that caution be exercised when administering erythromycin ophthalmic ointment to nursing women. Erythromycin has been shown to enter breast milk following oral dosing. Refer to the Erythromycin (Systemic) monograph for details. Systemic absorption would be required in order for erythromycin to enter breast milk and reach the nursing infant.

Ocular: Hypersensitivity, minor ocular irritation, redness.

Instill ~1 cm ribbon into affected eye(s) up to 6 times daily, depending on the severity of the infection
