Induction of general anesthesia and maintance of general anesthesia.

Etomidate is a short-acting hypnotic, which appears to have gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)–like effects. Unlike the barbiturates, etomidate reduces subcortical inhibition at the onset of hypnosis while inducing neocortical sleep.

Hepatic metabolism, Renal excretion 75% (80% as metabolite); Elimination Half Life: 75 min

Infant risk can not be ruled out.

Dermatologic: Injection site pain (20%); Gastrointestinal: Nausea, Vomiting; Neurologic: Myoclonus (32% )

Induction: 0.3 mg/kg IV (range 0.2 to 0.6 mg/kg) over 30 to 60 seconds. Maintenance: Dosage must be individualized and is usually less than the original induction dose.
