After diffusing into the organism, interacts with DNA to cause a loss of helical DNA structure and strand breakage resulting in inhibition of protein synthesis and cell death in susceptible organisms

Hypersensitivity to metronidazole, parabens, or other ingredients of the formulation or other nitroimidazole derivatives.

Metronidazole and its active hydroxyl metabolite are present in breast milk following oral administration at concentrations similar to the maternal plasma concentrations. However, absorption is limited following topical or vaginal application. The amount of metronidazole available systemically is <1% for topical gel or cream and ~2% for vaginal gel in comparison to oral doses. Information specific to the use of topical or vaginal metronidazole during lactation has not been located.

Dermatologic: Burning sensation of skin (?2%), erythema (?2%), skin irritation (?2%), xeroderma (?2%), acne vulgaris, contact dermatitis, pruritus, skin rash.
Local: Hypersensitivity reaction.

One supp. intravaginally once or twice daily for 5 days.
