Expectoration of abnormal sputum

Systemic: Guaifenesin is thought to act as an expectorant by increasing the volume and reducing the viscosity of secretions in the trachea and bronchi. Thus, it may increase the efficiency of the cough reflex and facilitate removal of the secretions ; however, objective evidence for this is limited and conflicting.

Expectoration of abnormal sputum:
(immediate-release) 200 to 400 mg ORALLY every 4 hours; MAX 2400 mg/day
(extended-release) 600 to 1200 mg ORALLY every 12 hours; MAX 2400 mg/day

Expectoration of abnormal sputum:
(12 years or older; immediate-release) 200 to 400 mg ORALLY every 4 hours; MAX 2400 mg/day
(12 years or older; extended-release) 600 to 1200 mg ORALLY every 12 hours; MAX 2400 mg/day
(6 to under 12 years of age; oral solution/soft chews/granules) 100 to 200 mg ORALLY every 4 hours; MAX 1200 mg/day
(4 to under 6 years of age; granules) 100 mg ORALLY every 4 hours; MAX 600 mg/day
(2 to under 6 years of age; oral solution) 50 to 100 mg ORALLY every 4 hours; MAX 600 mg/day
