Insulin acts via specific membrane-bound receptors on target tissues to regulate metabolism of carbohydrate, protein, and fats.
Target organs for insulin include the liver, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue.

Insulin Lispro
1. Tmax: 30 to 90 minutes
2. Bioavailability: 55% to 77%
3. Vd: 0.72 to 1.55 L/kg
4. Elimination Half Life: approximately 1 hour
Insulin NPH
1. Onset of action: 1 to 2 hours
2. Peak effect: 4 to 12 hours

5. Excretion: Urine

1. During episodes of hypoglycemia.
2. In patients who are hypersensitive to HUMALOG or to any of its excipients.

Administration:
1. Administer subQ injection within 15 minutes before or immediately after a meal.
2. Blood glucose monitoring is essential in all patients receiving insulin therapy.
Type 1 diabetes mellitus: SubQ
Note: Use of premixed insulin is not generally recommended in patients with type 1 diabetes.
1. Initial: ~0.4 to 0.5 units/kg/day; conservative doses of 0.2 to 0.4 units/kg/day may be considered to avoid the potential for hypoglycemia
2. Usual TDD maintenance range: 0.4 to 1 units/kg/day in divided doses (typically twice daily if using premixed insulin)
Type 2 diabetes mellitus: SubQ
1. Initial: 0.3 units/kg/day or 10 to 12 units/day in 2 or 3 divided doses
2. For consistent hypoglycemia (blood glucose <70 mg/dL), decrease dose by 10% to 20%; for severe hypoglycemia (or blood glucose <40 mg/dL), decrease dose by 20% to 40%

The dosage must be individualized.

1. Do not use after the expiration date.
2. Unopened HUMALOG should be stored in a refrigerator (2°~8°C), but not in the freezer; Do not use it if it has been frozen.
3. HUMALOG must be used within 28 days or be discarded, even if they still contain HUMALOG.
