Imipramine hydrochloride belongs to the dibenzazepine group of compounds. The precise mechanism of action is unknown, however, it is postulated that it blocks the uptake of norepinephrine at the nerve endings.

(Hospitalized patients) 100 mg PO per day in divided doses; may increase up to a MAX of 300 mg/day
(Outpatients) 75 mg PO per day; may increase up to a MAX of 200 mg/day; usual maintenance dose, 50 to 150 mg/day

Safety and effectiveness in children with nocturnal enuresis below 6 y/o have not been established;
effectiveness in pediatric patients for any other condition has not been established.
[Nocturnal enuresis]
(children 6-12 y/o) initial, 25 mg PO 1 h before bedtime, may increase in 25 mg increments to MAX dose of 50 mg/d or 2.5 mg/kg/d
(children over 12 y/o) initial, 25 mg PO 1 h before bedtime, may increase in 25 mg increments to MAX dose of 75 mg/d or 2.5 mg/kg/d
