Measles-mumps-rubella vaccination

Measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is a live virus vaccine preparation for simultaneous vaccination against measles (rubeola), mumps and rubella (German measles) diseases. It is highly immunogenic and stimulates measles hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) antibodies, mumps neutralizing antibodies and rubella HI antibodies in susceptible individuals.

active febrile infection or febrile respiratory illness (manufacturer) ; acute illness with or without fever, moderate or severe; defer vaccination unless the benefit of protection outweighs the risk of an adverse reaction (CDC)
anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reactions to neomycin; reconstituted vaccine contains approximately 25 mcg/dose; history of contact dermatitis, delayed-type cell-mediated immune response to neomycin is not a contraindication
bone marrow or lymphatic disorders, including blood dyscrasias, leukemia, lymphomas of any type, and other malignant neoplasms affecting the bone marrow or lymphatic systems
concomitant immunosuppressive therapy, except corticosteroids as replacement therapy (eg, Addison's disease)
congenital or hereditary immunodeficiency, family history, until immunocompetence of potential vaccine recipient is verified
hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine, including gelatin
HIV with severe immunocompromise (age-specific CD4+ T-lymphocyte less than 15%) (CDC) including AIDS- and HIV-associated infections (manufacturer)
immunodeficiency, severe (eg, from hematologic and solid tumors, congenital immunodeficiency, long-term immunosuppressive therapy (prednisolone 20 mg or 2 mg/kg daily or equivalent corticosteroid for 2 weeks or longer)) , primary or acquired immunodeficiency, cellular immune deficiencies, and hypogammaglobulinemic/dysgammaglobulinemic states; measles inclusion body encephalitis, pneumonitis, and death have been reported in immunocompromised persons inadvertently vaccinated with measles-containing vaccine (manufacturer)
pregnancy; avoid pregnancy for 3 months following vaccination

Ophthalmic: Optic neuritis, Retrobulbar neuritis
Respiratory: Pneumonitis

0.5 mL SUBQ, first dose at 12 to 15 months and second dose at 4 to 6 years ; do not delay first dose past 15 months of age because of increased risk of postvaccination seizures ; may give second dose before age 4 years as long as at least 28 days have elapsed since the first dose
