Active mild to moderate inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease)

Mesalamine is equally effective as sulfasalazine in treating inflammatory bowel disease; the side effect profile is superior to that of sulfasalazine. Mesalazine may eventually replace the use of its parent drug.

Hypersensitivity to mesalazine, sulfite or salicylates.

Safe

(1) mild and reversible: headache, abdominal pain, eructation, diarrhea, nausea, baldness
(2) salicylate toxicity: especially in overdose situations.
(3) renal effects: interstitial nephritis, nephrolithiasis, nephrotoxicity
(4) severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs): Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, bullous fixed drug eruption

Acute treatment: 1 suppository daily for 2 to 4 weeks, ideally retained for 1 to 3 hours for maximum benefit.
