Ampicillin (beta-lactamase-sensitive antibiotic)/ Sulbactam (beta-lactamase inhibitor)
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to one or more of the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) which in turn inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls, thus inhibiting cell wall biosynthesis.

Distribution:
Widely distributed to bile, blister, and tissue fluids; distributed to cerebrospinal fluid in the presence of inflamed meninges
Excretion:
Urine (~75% to 85% as unchanged drug) within 8 hours

Post-marketing
Hyperbilirubinemia, injection site reaction, increased AST and/or ALT, anaphylaxis, hypersensitivity reaction, Kounis syndrome (acute coronary syndrome caused by allergic reaction) <20210322>

Usual dose:
(IV or IM) 1.5 to 3 g every 6 hours; maximum 12 g daily

150 mg/kg/day, in divided Q6-8H. The total dose of sulbactam should not exceed 4 gm per day.

1. CrCl ≥30 ml/min: 1.5-3 gm Q6-Q8H
2. CrCl 15-29 ml/min: 1.5-3 gm Q12H
3. CrCl 5-14 ml/min: 1.5-3 gm Q24H
4. Hemodialysis, intermittent (thrice weekly): Dialyzable; 1.5 to 3 g every 12 to 24 hours, administer after dialysis
